Ellis Hahn coming from Green Point, Brookyn with her Red Hook based company L.e.H. Guitars, is the new star in the New York luthiers sky. This is actually partially correct, because Ellis has been working in Roger Sadowsky’s workshop since 2006 and over the years has become his right hand and a world-class master builder. However for most guitar builders the „own baby“ is a thing which shouldn’t be underestimated. Over the years Ellis has developed the idea of the offset bass, her bass model, and in 2018 the first model was finally completed. Through many years of working at top level she knows exactly what a premium instrument needs and how perfect an instrument has to be to meet the highest demands. I met Ellis for the first time in 2006 when Roger had his workshop in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Today I count her as one of my closest friends and when I’m in the big city she is my first port of call.
It’s always like coming home.
The next Generation
The Offset is Ellis‘ first model with which she introduces herself as a bass maker. After playing the bass for the first time, you immediately notice how much experience was „built into“ the bass. No matter what it is, the electronics, the neck construction, everything makes sense. You feel that this bass isn’t a quick shot, on the contrary, Ellis has planned a long time and the result is fantastic. The result is a bass that can be played very smoothly, it has a powerful tone with long sustain, almost as if it had been played for years. The whole thing is produced by the instrument, which was built in chambering construction, without any dead spot.Respectable is also Ellis‘ mix of traditional and new elements, which is very „New Yorkish“.
The Offset is a bass that leaves the classic boutique paths and clearly stands out due to its powerful but harmonic construction.

In spite of this solid construction, the offset is beyond any doubt. Play comfort, construction, craftsmanship and the well thought-out concept speak for themselves. When I played the Offset for the first time, I noticed that the instruments of Ellis are built with great dedication and passion. Several years before the offset was built, Ellis gave me a bass with a split coil/soapbar combination that sounded wonderful. Even at that time you could see the different ways of LeH Guitars.
