Pete Skjold

Skjold Design Guitars, Warsaw, Ohio, USA

On my search for a further bass builder, I came across Pete Skjold at the suggestion of some other instrument makers. I wrote to Pete in summer 2018 and told him about my idea. Fortunately, he liked it, agreed with my project and invited me home without ever having seen me. To be honest, I didn’t know exactly what I was getting myself into, I couldn’t remember Peter’s basses so well. So I took a car, drove eight hours from New York to his home town of Warsaw, a beautiful place in the state of Ohio, and was overjoyed to find some of the most spectacular basses I had ever played. Although the former professional bass player Skjold has a good name in the USA and is highly regarded by all his American colleagues, Pete is largely unknown in Germany.
But that will change in then future.

One Step Beyond

When I saw Pete’s workshop and his way of working for the first time, I knew immediately that he had found a very special bass maker who had not yet found his way to Germany by chance. Pete is a 1-man company and produces all his basses himself. He does not use any computer controlled machines, the basses never leave his hands. He told me that he has direct access at every stage of development to get the best out of the instrument. A quality control during the entire construction phase.

The bass that excited me the most about Pete was his Drakkar model. The Drakkar is a bass with an optional 33″ scale that Pete recommends. This bass had such a tight H-string or was equipped with an above-average sustain, which is even rare with a 35 inch scale. The tones were uniformly loud, the instrument could be played played like butter – a true dream bass. Although the target group for a 33 inch bass could be somewhat smaller than for normal longscale basses, I had to order a bass, as all other points spoke for themselves. The bass is rounded off with the Skjold Tone Audio 3-Band Semi Parametrik and 2 Skjold Audio Dual Coil pickups located under an ebony ramp. Together with Pete, I chose an exceptionally beautiful top for this bass, called „Exhibition Grade 5A Maple Burl Top“.

I am happy to be able to offer Pete’s instruments exclusively in Europe and to debut with them in Germany.
All instruments are freely configurable as custom instruments.

The second model I have chosen with Pete is the Skjoldslayer 5, which has a more traditional design. This bass is also built completely by hand, but has a regular 34″ scale. Pete dedicates a lot of time to the necks of his instruments. From a special sanding process, after which the basses feel like they have been played for years, to an extremely precise fret work. As a former bass professional he knows exactly where the sound comes from and as a master builder what you have to do to get the best out of the instrument. This includes the Quarter Sawn cutting method (cutting with standing tree-rings – the wood is cut in the direction of grain), which gives the instrument greater resistance. For this bass, Pete chose one of the most beautiful Morado fingerboards he had in his wood storage. It is combined with a 5A Maple Burl in Top Exhibition Grade quality. Both basses feature Skjold 3-band Semi Parametric and 2 Skjold Audio Dual Coil pickups.
